Project summary

The California Climate Action Corps (CCAC) is part of a statewide initiative to address and mitigate the effects of climate change. CCAC matches Fellows with organizations to mobilize community members to take direct climate action through education, volunteer mobilization, and assessment focused on urban greening, organic waste diversion and edible food recovery, and wildfire resiliency. This is a climate-focused, workforce development program for emerging climate and environmental leaders.

Opportunity description

The San Francisco Environment Department advances climate protection and enhances quality of life for all San Franciscans. SF Environment is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2040 while advancing racial and social equity, health and resilience, and economic and social justice. We've developed and deliver an equity-centered San Francisco Climate Action Plan consisting of world-class policies and strategies developed through cross-agency collaboration and deep community engagement to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions in SF. We measure, monitor, and communicate our progress and best practices and to share with the world what is possible. SF Environment is seeking 4 Outreach and Engagement Fellows to collaborate with different departments in 3 specific focuses areas. Duties include, but are not limited to: Zero Waste Support edible food rescue programming, outreach, and grant distribution for food recovery organizations and services. Promote climate-compost connection outreach at public compost giveaways hosted with San Francisco Unified School District and Parks and Recreation. Collaborate with Recology for our Waste Zero Champions program to promote zero waste outreach among residents and businesses through workshops, volunteer opportunities, and direct outreach. Environmental Outreach Collaborate with SF Environment teams to co-develop, pilot, and enhance innovative educational programs for San Francisco's K-12 students. Develop and facilitate Youth Climate Action events in San Francisco schools to empower the next generation of environmental leaders. Recruit and manage volunteers to implement urban greening initiatives Assess neighborhood needs for creating, restoring, and stewarding biodiverse nature in communities. Conduct community engagement for the landmark tree program. Facilitate and implement deep community engagement for Racial Equity Action Plan Phase 2, focusing on San Francisco residents and businesses. Additional duties include, but are not limited to: Conduct community outreach and engagement through promotion at City-sponsored events related to San Francisco's Climate Action Plan and 0-80-100-Roots framework.

Requirements and qualifications

Requirements

Live in California by August 16, 2024. Must be age 18 or older by August 16, 2024. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Must be a US Citizen, US National, or lawful US resident to participate.

Preferred qualifications

An interest in climate change mitigation, volunteerism, or public service. Experience with outreach, education, training, or community behavior change. Fundamental understanding of climate change science, environmental policies in California, and/or environmental priorities. Excellent organizational, writing, interpersonal, and speaking skills.
