Opportunity description

Climate Corps Education Outside is an 11.5-month, full-time AmeriCorps fellowship program.  The Garden Educator Fellow advances science and eco-literacy in public elementary schools by activating school gardens as learning laboratories for environmental education. Each fellow is placed at a school site. Compensation is a living allowance stipend, paid twice a month. There are as many as  30 openings for this position throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

Requirements and qualifications

Requirements

Residence in the Bay Area by August 2024. Commitment to the 11.5-month service term. Prolonged activity with bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate garden tools, a keyboard, a phone, a photocopier, a calculator, and office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to communicate with students as well as maintain data records. Adaptability to a physically changing environment. Able to work in the U.S.. Be 17 yrs or older.

Preferred qualifications

One or more years of experience teaching or working directly with youth, 2 or 4-year college degree or coursework in a related field. Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. A commitment to Climate Corps Education Outside’s mission and vision. A commitment to social justice and anti-racism. Desire to work in a public school setting. Experience working with children and adults from diverse backgrounds. Competency in Spanish or Chinese is a plus but not required.
